Kariann Abbate, MD
Director, Center for Comprehensive Heart Failure Care
Dr. Abbate is a board-certified cardiologist in advanced heart failure. She serves as Director of the Center for Comprehensive Heart Failure Care at The Valley Hospital. She received her medical degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Pennsylvania and has been involved in several clinical research trials. Dr. Abbate specializes in advanced heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and women’s heart issues. Using a holistic approach to patient care, she sees and treats each patient as an individual and targets treatment to an individual’s needs.
Juan B. Grau, MD
Director, Cardiothoracic Surgery
Dr. Grau is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon and the Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery for The Valley Hospital. He received his medical degree from Alcala De Henares University School of Medicine in Spain and completed his residency and specialty training at New York University. Dr. Grau is known internationally for his work undertaking advanced cardiac procedures, including off-pump coronary revascularization, complex valve repair, and septal myectomy to treat hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Grau is renowned for his translational research activities, bridging the gap between science and clinical medicine. He is an active contributor to the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery.
Rajiv Tayal, MD
Director, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Structural Heart Program
Dr. Tayal is a board-certified interventional cardiologist and Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Structural Heart Program for The Valley Hospital. Dr. Tayal completed his Internal Medicine residency at Seton Hall University of Heath Sciences and completed fellowship training in Advanced Heart Failure, Cardiac Transplantation, Interventional and Structural Cardiology at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, an affiliate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry New Jersey. Dr. Tayal’s mission is to provide patients with personalized, high-quality, and comprehensive care and offer a broad array of services geared to address even the most complex cardiovascular illnesses in a personalized and attentive manner. Some conditions he treats include coronary artery disease, complex coronary intervention, mechanical thrombectomy for acute pulmonary embolism, closure of atrial septal defects, patent foramen ovals, paravalvular leak, peripheral angiography and interventions, and renal denervation. He also specializes in transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), transcatheter mitral-edge-edge-repair (TEER) using the MitraClip, transcatheter tricuspid edge-edge-repair, transcatheter aortic valve-in-valve replacement, transcatheter mitral valve replacement, percutaneous balloon aortic and mitral valvuloplasty, Impella placement and mechanical support, and the treatment of cardiogenic shock.
Himanshu Gupta, MD
Director, Cardiac Imaging
Dr. Gupta is an internationally recognized expert in advanced cardiovascular imaging. He holds the position of Director of Cardiac Imaging and serves as a steering committee member at The Valley Hospital Heart and Vascular Institute, in alliance with Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Gupta received his medical degree from Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi University in India. He takes pride in personalizing diagnostic and treatment approaches based on a holistic view of patient care. He has conducted research on coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, valvular heart disease, diastolic function, right ventricular function, pulmonary hypertension, heart failure, COVID-19, and inflammation, and has been supported by NIH for his research. He has pioneered the use of cardiac CT for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy surgical planning. Dr. Gupta is trained in all aspects of cardiovascular imaging, including cardiovascular computerized tomography (CT), cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, and stress testing.
Dan Musat, MD
Director, Electrophysiology Research, and Associate Director, Electrophysiology
Dr. Musat is a board-certified cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist, serving as the Medical Director of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Program, Director of Electrophysiology Research, and Associate Director of Electrophysiology for Valley Health System. He received his medical degree from Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, Romania, and continued his training in cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital in New York, US. He believes in a team approach to care to maximize outcomes and reduce complications. To do so, Dr. Musat spends the necessary time and provides patients with his broad expertise to fully understand their disease and in conjunction with the patient develops the appropriate treatment options. Dr. Musat specializes in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, supraventricular tachycardia, and ventricular tachycardia, and in the treatment of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Some of the techniques he uses are catheter ablation for cardiac arrhythmia, including radiofrequency, cryo-balloon and pulse filed energy ablation techniques, pacemaker implantation, implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation, loop recorder implantation, cardioversion, and left atrial appendage occlusion. His evaluation for patients with HCM is based on the latest guidelines and advancements in the field. He understands the complexity of the disease and the multifaceted approach necessary for successful management.
Isha Verma, MD

Dr. Verma is a board-certified cardiologist, specializing in advanced cardiac imaging. She received her medical degree from Seth Gs Medical College and Kem Hospital in India. Dr. Verma uses her expertise and evidence-based medicine to understand and choose the right imaging modality, which results in achieving early diagnosis and the availability of treatment in a timely manner. Dr. Verma performs and interprets CT angiograms, cardiac CT, cardiac MRI and MRA, exercise and nuclear stress tests, general and complex echocardiograms, and general and structural transesophageal echocardiograms.
Hussein Rahim, MD

Dr. Rahim is a board-certified cardiologist, specializing in structural heart disease and interventional cardiology. He did his internal medicine training at Johns Hopkins Hospital and cardiology, interventional, and structural heart training at New York-Presbyterian - Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
