If you have lymphedema – a buildup of lymphatic fluid under the skin – you’re probably all-too-familiar with the uncomfortable swelling in your arms, legs or other parts of the body. While there is no cure for this condition, relief is possible through Valley’s lymphedema program, where our goal is to improve your limb function and your overall quality of life.
The Valley Outpatient Occupational Therapy Department provides skilled interventions to patients diagnosed with lymphedema of upper and or lower extremities through Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT). CDT is comprised of thorough education in managing your diagnosis, as well as the development of a treatment plan that includes:
- Compression therapies
- Manual lymphatic drainage therapy, a specialized massage technique that stimulates the flow of lymphatic fluid back to the lymphatic system
- Skin/wound care
- Home exercise program
Conditions Treated
- Primary lymphedema: This condition can be present at birth (congenital) or develop after puberty. It may run in some families and may be associated with other inherited conditions.
- Secondary lymphedema: This condition may occur after damage to or obstruction of the lymph vessels. This may result from surgery, infection or trauma.
