Valley Health System is pleased to welcome Joseph Mathew, MD, FACP, FCCP, CPE, as Chair of Medical Specialties for Valley Medical Group.
Dr. Mathew is a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and the American College of Physicians. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary diseases, and critical care medicine. Dr. Mathew’s clinical areas of interest include COPD, respiratory tract infections, and point-of-care ultrasonography. He has published several manuscripts and book chapters and serves as an ad hoc reviewer for multiple prestigious journals.
Dr. Mathew comes to Valley from the Mount Sinai Health System, where he held numerous leadership positions including Associate Chief Medical Officer, Site Director of the Institute for Critical Care Medicine, and Director of the Center for Advanced Medical Simulation (CAMS) at Mount Sinai West. He will maintain his academic appointment as Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
“While I practice evidence-based medicine based on the latest research, I still think of medicine as an art where the care has to be tailored to each individual patient based on their individual needs,” said Dr. Mathew. “I am excited to join the team here at Valley and be a part of the expansion and growth of Valley Health System, with the new hospital and development of graduate medical education programs.”
Dr. Mathew will see patients at 1200 East Ridgewood Avenue, in Ridgewood, New Jersey.

Dr. Mathew obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from New York University and Doctor of Medicine degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine and chief residency at Mount Sinai West and Mount Sinai Morningside, formerly St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital. He completed a fellowship in pulmonary diseases and critical care medicine at the Beth Israel Medical Center.
