Valley Health System congratulates Raffaele M. Bernardo, DO, FACP, AAHIVS, Medical Director of LGBTQ+ Services for Valley Medical Group, on being honored as a New Jersey Fifth District Hometown Hero by Congressman Josh Gottheimer. Dr. Bernardo and other Hometown Heros were recognized at a ceremony on Monday, December 16.
The Fifth District Hometown Heroes Awards are presented to neighbors, business leaders, first responders, teachers, children, seniors, and community leaders to recognize their commitment to bettering the lives of other New Jersey residents and families. Nominees are chosen by neighbors and community leaders for outstanding contributions to the district.
“Dr. Bernardo has an unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of our community, specifically the LGHTQ+ community,” said Robert Brenner, MD, MMM, FACHE, President and CEO of Valley Health System. “He has been instrumental in the establishment of Valley’s Center for LGBTQ+ Care, which provides comprehensive healthcare services for LGBTQ+ patients in a safe and affirming space. From day one, his goal has been to eliminate healthcare disparities, optimize access to care, and improve healthcare outcomes within the community.”
In addition to his work at Valley, Dr. Bernardo was recognized for his passionate advocacy for healthcare equity, offering his views and health information at health fairs, and community events, in educational videos and podcasts, and in interviews with local.
“I am honored to be recognized as a New Jersey Fifth District Hometown Hero,” said Dr. Bernardo. “This award highlights the importance of our work in creating an inclusive healthcare environment where the LGBTQ+ community feels safe, respected, and affirmed. I am incredibly proud to be part of a medical center that prioritizes equitable care for all and actively works to reduce health disparities in the LGBTQ+ community.”
